 Barangay BDRRM kwentuhan Reflection
by Warren Wellesley C. Yap L-AB-3

It is nice to know that Barangay 581's community is well-prepared for disasters such as the supposed "Big One". They do seminars 2x a year to assure the community has a reminder on knowing what to do. Aside from this the barangay also performs school seminars, P. burgos elementary school, antonio maceda elementary school and malbar elementary school. One of the most prevalent issues present in my community is the depressed areas that could flood very easily. I believe this is due to the fact that the road and drainage/sewage systems are hard to repair when there are a lot of indigent people. The long-term solution would be to relocate the indigent people to another place and perform a road maintenance, drainage maintenance and to upgrade their residence to be more sturdy and flood proof. Another hazard is the very small evacuation site that is the barangay hall itself. It is only comprised of a small basketball court and an office. The barangay has already asked the congressman to increase the size of the court and to shrink the size of the office to allow more room for evacuees.

The philippines has been an extremely disaster-prone area that has typhoons, earthquakes and active volcanoes all over the place. The increase in awareness for DRRM has increased over the years in the Philippines. Yet one of the problems i think the Philippines is facing in the DRRM department is the lack of sophisticated facilities and technology. Aside from that places like this presented in the image below.

Where the electrical wire posts are disorganized and messy can prove very dangerous during an earthquake or even on an everyday situation if it chooses to break. Aside from that the only evacuation site that is near by is a small court, refer to the image below, that I have mentioned a while ago. Either way the basketball court is a safe place nonetheless, the messy electrical posts are the real danger.

A good example of good community practice is placing the sari-sari store near the barangay hall, this way the barangay can facilitate and regulate the sari-sari store with ease.

I've been living in this neighborhood and crossing this street many times over my life, but only now do I realize how pitiful the drrm system is in the the street. A good way to contribute would be to report and complain about the messy electrical posts that serve as a disservice to those using those lines and to those who are in the area during a disaster. But knowing this country, filing complaints are not enough so another action would be to spread awareness about the dangers this could present.
Disasters are something we can mitigate and reduce, there aren't a lot of ethical problems with it to. As an advanced society, we should take up the responsibility to keep each other safe and well. In my opinion, not doing so would take us back to the ages where everyone was in only for themselves.
